Looking For Angelina: A Learning Guide on Family Violence

It was the story of the century. It caused uproar around the globe. Evocative and riveting, Looking for Angelina is the true story of an Italian woman sentenced to death in 1911 for murdering her husband.

Although based in 1911, Looking for Angelina raises questions that are relevant today. An examination of Angelina’s story, as documented in the film, provides a valuable medium to promote discussion and understanding of family violence.

The Learning Guide has been developed as a resource for secondary school teachers, guidance counsellors, college and university professors who are interested in integrating material on family violence into their curricula. The design of the guide is twofold: 1) to educate participants regarding family violence; and 2) to help educators provide appropriate support and referrals to individuals who have been, or may be exposed to family violence.

The Learning Guide is divided into two sections:

Section I: Background Information for Facilitators provides information on the film Looking for Angelina, and guidelines for responding effectively to disclosure, and reporting requirements.

Section II: Teaching Modules & Activities offers a range of activities designed for classroom use in either secondary or post-secondary educational settings. Due to the nature of the film, it is recommended that Grade 11 be the youngest age group for this educational program. Activities and handouts may be photocopied from the manual for use with participants.
